VH1 Honors The Dirty South

By Krystle Carmona

Hip Hop.  Pronunciation: hip hap. Function: noun.  According to Merriam-Webster online dictionary, a subculture especially of inner-city youths who are typically devotees to rap music.  However, rap music is just a product of the culture.  Hip Hop is the artistic expression discovered all over subways and alongside buildings.  Hip Hop is the sounds brought to life by DJs and MCs.  Hip Hop is Break Dancing and so much more.  Hip Hop is a way of living.

Monday night marked another year and another celebration of hip hop, as true pioneers were recognized and honored by VH1 and so many artists who owe much of their success to those artists who have paved the way for them. The honorees included: The Dirty South! That’s right, the entire dirty dirty!  However giving special recognition and shine to:  The 2 Live Crew, J. Prince, Jermaine Dupri, Luther “Uncle Luke” Campbell, Master P., Organized Noize, and Timbaland

This year’s VH1 Hip Hop Honors opened up with a skit from comedian and host,  Craig Robinson, getting a dirty south makeover from the one and only Lil’ Jon…YEEEAAAHH!  And to complete his transformation, was adorned with custom made Paul Wall grills.

First on the list of honorees was Luther Luke Campbell, but we all know him best as “Uncle Luke.”  Luke created the South’s 1st hip hop label, which gave artists like, The 2 Live Crew, Trick Daddy, Trina and Pitbull, their start.  Dubbed “The originator of Miami Bass,” Luke changed the face of the South.  In true Luke fashion, he, along with Trick Daddy and Pitbull hit us with the ever so classic party anthem, “Do Do Brown,” and yes, massive booty shaking everywhere.  Don’t front, yall was rocking too, it’s okay, we won’t tell nobody!

J. Prince, next to bat was the face of Rap A Lot Records and the voice for the ghetto.  The Game, Bun B, Drake, Do or Die and Juvenile were among the artists who paid homage to an original ghetto boy.

Funny man Jonah Hill introduced the next honoree, Atlanta native and SoSo Def founder, Jermaine Dupri.  The Franchise Boyz and company rocked out to “Oh I Think They Like Me.”  Bow Wow brought back the backwards fashion hitting the stage with a Kriss Kross classic, “Jump” then later his own hit, “Fresh As I’m Iz.”  JD also hit us with a bar on “Money Ain’t a Thang” and lastly ended with Diddy on the remix track “Welcome to Atlanta.”  Atlanta definitely did their thing.

Next, Romeo who is far from little and looking more like a young cut Nelly honored his father Master P.  for not only building No Limit Records from the ground up, but being a part of putting southern hip hop on the map.  Gucci Mane and Kid Capri were also a part of this tribute.  Silk the Shocker and Trina brought us back with their hit, “That’s Cool,” but the crowd went crazy when Mystikal came out with “Make Em’ Say Uhh,” surrounded by camouflage beauties that we remember oh so well from the No Limit crew.

The city of Atlanta was even honored, with an appearance from T.I. and performances from the Ying Yang Twins, DJ Drama, Bone Crusher, and Gucci Mane.  ATL had us all “getting low” and fueling our confidence with “I Ain’t Neva Scared.”

Missy then paid homage to her longtime friend, Timbaland who not only brought a new and eclectic sound to the game, but introduced us to a different realm of music, infusing sounds we hadn’t quite heard of yet, not together at least.  Fabolous, Kerri Hilson, D.O.E., Bun B and Sebastian were just some of the few to honor Timbaland last night.  But it was those Missy/Timbo classics, such as “Get Your Freak On” and “Work It” that we remembered what we loved about Mr. Tim Mosley.

David Banner and Kelly Rowland introduced Slim Thugg, Chamillionaire and Paul Wall who also hit the stage giving respect to their state, Texas.

The 2 Live Crew, who explained in their video that they made records from a comedian standpoint, but was taken way too serious had us in laughter once again as they performed a medley of their hits, including “Me So Horny.”

Chilli and Lauren London then introduced one of Atlanta, Georgia’s hottest production teams, Organized Noize, who is responsible for TLC’s “Waterfalls.”  Nelly, Murphey Lee, Asher Roth, Kujo, and Sleepy Brown hit the stage performing The Dungeon Family anthems reminding us that ATL  is here to stay…so “Whatchu Really Know About The Dirty South?”

It was only fitting that VH1′s new sister and brother team, Brandy and Ray J make an appearance as well.  The show ended with an all star performance from Miami’s finest, Trina, Flo Rida, Rick Ross, and Pitbull and let’s not forget, DJ Khaled who was all over the stage doing what he does best.  Overall, the VH1 Hip Hop Honors was entertaining and lived up to the performance scale.

So tell me…when was the first time you fell in love with hip hop?

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TELEVISION-All New Episodes…Equal A Very Happy Viewer

By Krystle Carmona

So, yes there was an all new episode of Romantically Challenged this week…yawn! However, we won’t count it out just yet, but today…Let’s Talk Reality

Brandy & Ray J: A Family Business

Is it just me or does Momma Norwood remind you of your Auntie, you know the strict one that you would hate for mommy and daddy to leave you with because she was all about that tough love.  Well yea, it’s okay, because luckily you’re not the only one.  Already into episode 3, and VH1s hit reality show, Brandy & Ray J: A Family Business continue to kill the stereotype that Hollywood families are unlike the ordinary. In Sunday’s episode , Ray J broke the news to his family about getting back into the studio and working alongside mega producer Rodney Jerkins.  However, not everyone in the Norwood camp was thrilled.  This episode invites us to a front row seat of the Rodney Jerkins vs. Brandy Norwood beef. Round 1! Fight!  Well, while it didn’t quite go down like that, we did find out that Brandy was opposed of her brother working with Jerkins because of previous personal issues.  The two who went five times platinum with the album, Never Say Never, selling over 10 million records together and dominating the industry at one point had a fallen out over musical differences.

Brandy felt as though Jerkins slighted her on one of her albums, purposefully not doing his best and feared that he would do the same to Ray J.  Brandy summed it up best when she said that Rodney could  “kick rocks with an open toe shoe.” Ray J, with his hands full, felt pressure from Jerkins also not wanting to work with Momager Norwood.  It’s no surprise Sonia loves to be in the forefront of the business, handling her children’s careers, but not everyone, including Jerkins is on board the Sonia Norwood train. Surprisingly Sonia’s reaction to Ray J’s decision of working with Jerkins on his own was completely different from what he expected as she approved of his decision to work with the hit making producer.  Brandy and Jerkins later hash out their differences, settling some issues, leaving plenty unresolved. “Rodney and I can’t make up in words, we gotta make up in music,” said Brandy. Hmmm, should we expect a B Rocker/Jerkins collabo in the future?  Fingers crossed. The episode closed with a party celebrating the new R & B office, Brandy smitten by New Orleans Saint, Jamal Brown and lots of family love. While Sonia plans to let her children fly a little on their own, she says, “I am gonna be a Mother Hen until they bury me six feet under.”  Sorry Brandy and Ray, but we believe her.  Catch Brandy & Ray J: A Family Business on VH1 Sunday nights at 9pm.

Dancing With the Stars

This week Dancing With The Stars was full of energy and every bit of sexy as the couples took to the stage choosing from two very passionate dances; the Samba and Argentine Tango. Evan Lysacek, suffering a mild concussion during rehearsals, still managed to pull off a just okay routine, dancing the Samba to a remixed version of Black Eye Peas, “Hey Mama.” The judges weren’t a fan of the ice skater, summing up his performances as losing the battle with the Samba. Ouch! Pretty harsh.  On a brighter note, comedian Niecey Nash and partner Louie proved that they could pull off a more technical routine than last week with the Argentine Tango.  It was funny yet seductive and she won a lot of hearts (or laughs) that night.  ESPN host, Erin Andrews and bad boy Max danced a super hot Samba but wasn’t quite felt by Len, who believes she’s better than the gimmicks. Ochocinco and Cheryl looked stunning as they danced the Argentine Tango powerfully and not only earned much respect from the audience but more importantly from the judges as they praised him for his growth and was asked to dance an encore routine during the result show.

Crowd favorite and Pussy Cat Doll Nicole Scherzinger danced a beautiful Samba, but unfortunately for Len, it was nothing but a bunch of sexy moves and gyrations. However, viewers were not disappointed as she still remains in the competition. After repeatedly landing in the bottom two, Pamela Anderson managed to escape that route this week due to a very sexy and seductive Argentine Tango, which consisted of kicks and lifts.  With some technical mistakes, Anderson is safe…for now. Unfortunately, we cannot say the same for ‘Bachelor’ star, Jake Pavelka, as the stumble he took during his routine landed him and partner Chelsea Hightower in the bottom, resulting in elimination. However, DWTS fans were treated to a performance from Melissa Ethridge when she appeared on the results show singing “Fearless Love,” off of her brand new album, as well as classic “Come to My Window.” Tune in to Fox on Monday nights at 8pm followed by Tuesday nights at 9pm for the result show.

American Idol

Contestants came out ready for battle as they took on mentor of the week, Shania Twain’s songs.

Lee DeWyze, judge favorite sings “You’re Still the One” and this guys voice is just ready to cut a CD like now…no right now!  The crowd loved him as well as the judges and I may be a little premature in saying this, but this dude’s going to the finals.  Shania watched from the audience, emotionally moved as she witnessed Big Mike’s rendition of her song, “It Only Hurts When I’m Breathing.” The teddy bear melted the hearts of millions around the world with this smooth ballad that oozed emotion.  Ellen compared him to Luther (Luther Vandross that is), while Simon called the performance “wet,” well whatever that meant, if you weren’t a fan of Michael Lynche before, you just may be after this weeks performance.  Golden Boy, Casey James, guitar in hand was just as beautiful as he could be, singing “Don’t” with more passion and conviction than he had in weeks.  Randy thought it was “one of the best Casey James performances ever.” However, the opposite goes for Crystal Bowersox who didn’t have her best performance with “No One Needs to Know,” but Kara summed it up best when she said, “it’s kind of impossible for her not to be good.”

The judges all agreed on one thing; country is just not her thing.  But, they were impressed with 17 yr. old Aaron Kelly, who sang “You’ve Got a Way.”  He possessed such clarity and maturity in his voice and after struggling for the last two weeks, he finally got it right. It felt sincere and believable and later Kelly revealed he was singing that for his mom…awww! Quirky, power vocalist, Siobhan Magnus ended the show taking on Shania’s 1st #1 country hit, “Any Man of Mine,” and boy did she do it justice.  Belting out big notes and wowing the audience as she does best, but it wasn’t enough to save her as she found herself alongside Casey James in the bottom 2.  30 million votes later and performances by Shakira, Rascal Flatts, Sons of Sylvia, and Lady Antebellum; America found themselves saying good bye to peculiar Siobhan Magnus who was given a  standing ovation and hugs by the judges.  Find out who your next American Idol will be by tuning in every Tuesday night at 8pm on Fox, followed by the live results show on Wednesday at 9pm.
